Certification of organic coffee in Challabamba
Four representatives from the lower and warmer communities of the District
of Challabamba (Department of Cusco) traveled to La Florida (Department of
Cajamarca, in the North of Peru), to learn from their colleagues in that
area. They returned with 1600 bamboo plants, which fascinated them and which
they will grow along the rivers in their communities. They were also very
impressed with the production and marketing of organic coffee. They decided
to increase their coffee production and have their coffee certified as an
organic product.
The changes required to get the certification will take 1 or 2 years. The
farmers will have to plant native trees to provide shade for their coffee
plants, they will have to grow only their native varieties of coffee, and
improve processing, and so much more...
They have never used any chemical fertilizers or pesticides, which is a
great starting point.
The coffee (and bamboo!!) farmers of Challabamba will receive the necessary
support from a friend they met during their trip to Cajamarca (Mr. Ever
Cueva). He will start working with them from mid-April 2010. Mr. Cueva has
extensive experience not only in organic coffee production, but also to
achieve certification, and to create associations of coffee producers...
