 (Millennium Champs) Exchange with Arequipa farmers
A group of 40 farmers from the districts of Challabamba and Caicay will spend this week in the Arequipa countryside to learn a fairly sophisticated technique of plot by plot irrigation. This technology was first used in the northern coast of Peru, under the pre-Inka Mochica and Chimu cultures. Even until today you can observe the remains of this peculiar technique between the rivers Jequetepeque and Zaña, similar to those in the picture.
Gravity irrigation is very efficient when this technique is used. The Unu Kamayoq, experts in this practice, demonstrated it to Cusco farmers. Various Unu Kamayoq work with our project in the different districts with those farmers who can apply this knowledge to their daily reality.
