(Millennium Champs) A fruit tree expert for the Caicay district
Erly Mariano Paypay Matos arrived in Cusco as a fruit production expert to work for Pachamama Raymi. Mr Paypay is from Auco, in the lower reaches of the Yauyos mountains, where the fruit production techniques are well advanced.
Currently Caicay produces peaches, but the techniques used are inadequate.
Mr. Paypay intends to extend the peach production in the district, as well as that of apples and pears. He will be offering capacity-building courses with pilot orchards of approximately 30 trees each. Participants are interested, and will replicate his technique as they go. Results will be visible in a period of about 6 months.
Mr. Paypay’s other goal is to introduce new species such as the lucuma and the avocado. A local variety of avocado has been identified that is resistant to the climate, that could be used as a base to graft a more commercial variety.
